How does a SIM card connect to the mobile network?
When a SIM card-based device is switched on, it runs a location update procedure indicating its IMSI to the network. The first procedure for updating the position is called "IMSI connection procedure."
When the device is switched off, it runs an "IMSI disconnection procedure" to communicate to the network that it is no longer connected. When a device is switched on in a new network (e.g., the user has moved to a new country) or the user moves to a mobile network of another operator, the subscriber must register with the new network to indicate his or her current location.
